Strategic Plan for Mentee Educational Foundation

This strategic plan represents Mentee Educational Foundation’s response to its understanding of the educational needs in Liberia, as well as the current opportunities and challenges for offering high quality early childhood education in Liberia. The five-year period of this strategic plan will be a time of assessing Mentee Educational Foundation’s approaches to providing this education. Additionally, the foundation will strive to broaden its interactions with communities in Kakata, Liberia and here in the United States. Successful implementation of the following mission, vision, and strategic goals will result in Mentee Educational Foundation becoming a strong organization known for its high-quality school and strong investment in the Kakata community.
Mission
Building a Foundation for Excellence in Liberia’s Early Childhood Education
Vision
Mentee Educational Foundation leads efforts in Liberia to provide early childhood education to children and their parents.
Mentee Educational Foundation provides quality, tuition-free primary education to children who cannot afford public school fees.
Mentee School is well known for its teacher-training program.
Mentee Educational Foundation has a robust fundraising program that draws from individuals, businesses and government contracts. Eventually, Mentee School will become self-sustaining through projects that bridge the school with the community.

Strategic Goal I
Fundraising & Public Relations: Develop a fundraising program that provides for school construction, land development, teacher salaries, curriculum provision, and administrative costs.
Outcome 1: Raise $100,000 by September, 2011 in $25,000 intervals.
Outcome 2: Research, identify, and apply for grant opportunities both in the U.S. and in Africa in compliance with the Liberian Ministry of Education.
Strategic Goal II
Liberia Communications: Use the Mentee name to engage the Kakata community in school development.
Outcome 1: Maintain NGO status and working relationship with Ministry of Education.
- Follow administrative procedures to comply with laws
- Open bank account in Kakata, Memorandum of Understanding with Ministry of Education, Secure office space in Kakata
- Hire staff to carry out administrative operations
- Maintain working relationships between Chief of Liberian Operations and identified key staff in Ministry of Education
- Comply with needs expressed by Ministry of Education
Outcome 2: Form mutually beneficial partnerships with other key organizations, such as primary and secondary feeder schools, land development organizations, educationally-focused nonprofits, and government entities.
- Identify NGOs and nonprofits that have similar or complimentary aims to MEF and find ways to work together
- Work closely with Rural Development Institute
- Become part of Bridges to Understanding’s network of schools
Outcome 3: Garner ongoing, active interest from Kakata community.
- Maintain presence and perform outreach in areas such as the market, primary and secondary schools

Strategic Goal III
Educational Plans: Provide tuition-free early childhood education to Kakata children and their parents. Prepare children to enter primary education institutions.
Outcome 1: Offer two classes each of twenty pre-school aged students for school year 2012-2013.
- Hire two teachers with early childhood education expertise
- Develop and implement student application and selection process
- Follow Ministry of Education-approved curriculum
- Consult with early childhood educators and development organizations in order to develop and add additional curricula

- Upon graduation from our program, feed students into primary institutions with whom Mentee Educational Foundation has built relationships.
Outcome 2: Provide education on health, nutrition, discipline, etc. to parents of enrolled students for school year 2012-2013.
- Hire adult educator
- Follow Ministry of Education-approved curriculum
- Develop literacy program
- Develop additional curricula as appropriate
Outcome 3: Offer annual teacher trainings to Liberian educators.
- Continue to work closely with Friends of Liberia to offer trainings
- Develop application and selection process for trainees
- Create evaluation system for trainings
- Incorporate feedback from trainers, participants and Ministry of Education
- Plan and modify curriculum and training annually according to evaluation system
Strategic Goal IV
School Construction & Land Development: Build a school structure that fosters integrated learning for young children and their families. Develop land for agricultural uses by the school and families.
Outcome 1: Raise school structure to roof level by Spring 2012.
- Continue to work with Construction for Change
- Oversee construction to include roof and external walls using architectural plans
Outcome 2: Complete school structure with classrooms by September 2012.
- Oversee construction to include classrooms, bathrooms using architectural plans
- Furnish classrooms
Outcome 3: Develop land for school’s agricultural use by 2015.
- Lease land from Mentee-Brewster
- Consult with local farmers
- Incorporate agricultural education into parents’ curriculum
Outcome 4: Remodel house on school property for parental literacy program by 2015.
- Hire contractor
- Oversee remodeling to include appropriate-sized rooms, kitchen and bathroom facilities
